This Month’s Lineup

When thinking about ageing Orange wine there are a few things to consider: How long did the wine spend on the skins? What type of vessel did it live in? How much oxygen contact did it have? How much sulphur was added?

This month we dig into our own wines to see how they are developing and also ask industry star Anne Sperling and columnist/author Simon J. Woolf on their insights to the ageability of Orange Wines.

My Tasting Notes Now: A beautiful golden colour. Rich, yolk-heavy lemon curd with spicy rose petals and a dusty floral note on the nose. Lemon steel with delicate tannins and a mild acidity.  I recommend trying this wine chilled to put the wine into better balance.

1 x 2019 ORNG (Library Wine)

243 days on skin. Spiced orange and ginger on the nose. A strong acid backbone in this wine carry the tannins and citrus driven flavours through to the finish. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with a minute amount of sulphur added.

2021 Skin-Fermented Gewürz. (250ml Sample)

A very fresh pink-orange wine. Aromatics of rose petal, lemon and rosemary leap out of the glass. The palate is acidic with chalky tannins and a soft lemon finish. This wine is still in tank and has yet to have any added sulphur. Set to be bottled in the next week or two.

2021 ORNG (250ml Sample)

Very pale orange in colour, delicate peppery notes with just a hint of citrus. This wine is taking a rest from the big transition it just faced with its pressing. The palate is quite light in weight compared to other years, but has a very strong acid backbone. There is a lot of purity and creaminess on the mid-palate that carries the tannins through to the end. This wine needs some time to age in barrel, allowing flavours to concentrate and settle, before I bottle it.

About our Wines of the Month Club

Wines of the Month is my curated selection — exploring the world of wine — to share and enjoy giving you insights into what I think about when making wine. Each month is built around a single theme: such as an exploration of grape type, style, vintage or site and includes a selection of 2-4 bottles (or have the option to double your shipment). Plus, from time-to-time we even include other hard-to-find wines we like!

Available in 3-, 6- and 12-month terms.
~$125/mo.
