Trail Estates Winery

This past week we removed most of the textiles covering our vines. We switched from burying with earth a few years ago and the rains this week (and next?) make us thankful for that decision. While it can’t replace the romance of farming dirt (kidding!), it’s still 10-hr days and about 23,000 steps taken! Geotextile crossfit classes anyone?

The plants are looking healthy. The buds are just at the fuzzy stage so they still have some cold-hardiness — a good thing if temperatures indeed drop again Saturday morning!

So, while we worry about that, we thought you’d like info on our latest Mixed Packs. Also check out the Pinot Gris Collab pack, at the bottom of this email, put together with the assistance of our friends at Redtail Vineyards and Hubbs Creek Vineyards!

Little Fluffy Clouds
Are Back!

3-PACK: $124 all-in  |  6-PACK: $212 all-in

2020 Little Fluffy Clouds Sparkling - Preview!!!
This wine is ALIVE with bubbles and flavour: Careful opening this one!!!
60% Pinot Gris, 40% Muscat Ottonel. Pressed whole cluster and fermented naturally under temperature control for 2 months. A small amount of juice was added at bottling to obtain a pressure of 3 bar. Dreamlike aromatics of peaches and limes that lift you up high into the clouds. Frothy bubbles with a touch of lime and a creamy leesy finish on the palate.

2020 Pét Nat - Rosé
A fun wine! 92% Riesling, 5% Baco Noir, 3% Cabernet Franc. A wine that fermented naturally, slowly and cooly for 2.5 months before it approached the sugar level appropriate for bottling. Racked 6 times to ensure a clear wine this wine went to bottle with an aim of obtaining 3.5 bar pressure. Still fermenting! Still tinged with delicious sweetness but not cloying. Vibrant red raspberries and cranberries with a pleasant spritz on the palate. Bright and juicy, off-dry (currently 11g/L RS) with light effervescence!

2017 Foxcroft Chardonnay - Unfiltered
“The charming and natural beauty of a chardonnay originally locked in by a self-reflecting reductive tendency now emerges with full mellifluous smoulder and a honeyed smokiness… a virtuoso performance only made possible by chances taken, through the scientific experimentation of a winemaker with a sense of wonder. This performance of Foxcroft fruit has not been noted before and neither will it be repeated.” 91 PTS  Michael Godel

Harvest Review 2020

Harvest Review: 2020 might be Ontario’s best vintage yet

BY JACOB GREENWOOD / WINE + DRINKS / OCTOBER 24TH, 2020 /

2020 is a year for the history books. The international community is focussed on the pandemic and other global issues, making it very easy to overlook what’s happening in our very own backyard. In our Harvest Review series, Quench writers talk to winemakers across the country to find out how they’re handling this year’s unique challenges, from COVID-19 restrictions to climate change and everything in between. We start with Ontario, where the vintage is shaping out to be one of the best yet… though getting it to wine-loving consumers is proving a challenge.

Ontario’s wine industry is a driving economic force within the province. According to “Grape Growers of Ontario”, over 17,000 acres of land in Ontario are covered in tangles of vineyards that account for over 71 percent of Canada’s wine production. The experts responsible for all this wine are at the mercy of mother nature’s ever-changing temperaments when it comes to crafting quality wines.

Ontario winemakers believe this year’s harvest will be one of the best out of recent memory. I spoke with these winemakers about their harvest season, and what their winemaking communities hoping to expect.

Prince Edward County

Nestled closely to Lake Ontario, Prince Edward County is a small but inventive wine-producing region. Home to wineries new and old, the region boasts a wide array of grapes and wines that aren’t found elsewhere in Ontario. Anything from the Rieslings to the Chardonnay grapes, Prince Edward County has them all!

When it comes to this year’s harvest, it seems that the weather coupled with the arrival of COVID-19 made for some ironic circumstances. “Mother nature’s cruel joke this year is that it is one of the best growing seasons we’ve had in recent memory,” said Geoff Webb head winemaker at Black Prince Winery in Picton. “But many wineries don’t have the tank space, due to COVID and not selling as much wine as in normal years… but the quality of what is produced should be outstanding.”

Webb isn’t the only winemaker who believes that the 2020 harvest will be exceptional. Heidi Del-Gatto, co-owner of Del-Gatto Estates, claims the heat of the summer has added fantastic flavour to the grapes from this year’s harvest. “Your fruit is very clean and very sweet, just your grapes might be smaller and yield less juice because of the hot summer and lack of rain.”

Niagara

Niagara has made quite a name for itself in terms of production and quality. Despite being a relatively young region, Niagara winemakers are responsible for the highest wine production in Ontario. They’ve worked to introduce palates to the allure and mastery of Niagara wines.

Like the winemakers of Prince Edward County, Eric Pearson, winemaker at the Konzelmann Estate Winery, says that 2020 has yielded one of the best harvests he’s ever seen. He also points out that mother nature is to thank for the taste of this year’s wines.

Pearson has a specific goal in mind when speaking about Niagara wines. “Of course when it comes to all winemaking regions in Ontario, BC or Quebec, we are trying to make the best wines possible,” said Pearson, “we are trying to introduce that mindset that, you know, good wine does come out of Ontario and Canada, and sometimes you want to open up your cellar to some Canadian wine.”

Pearson spoke about how despite the usual mechanical hardships, and the ever-present uncertainty of mother nature, Niagara’s wineries produce great quality wines from an always expanding repertoire of grapes. He remains happily confident that 2020’s harvest season will yield some of the best from Niagara in years

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY

Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is located in Southern Ontario on a large irregular headland or littoral at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, just west of the head of the St. Lawrence River. This headland (officially named Prince Edward County in 1792) is surrounded on the north and east by the Bay of Quinte. As the Murray Canal now connects the bay to Lake Ontario across the only land connection, the county is technically an island.

The county’s relatively mild climate due to the influence of Lake Ontario has led to the establishment of about 40 wineries and close to 12 craft breweries; as a result, Prince Edward County is one of Ontario’s newest designated vinicultural areas. The lake effect from Lake Ontario results in heavier snowfall than in neighboring counties.

Indian Point of Cressy Point, the easternmost point of Prince Edward County, and entrance to the Bay of Quinte.
Prince Edward County is an island community encompassing approximately 1,000 square kilometers (390 sq mi), with over 500 kilometers (310 mi) of shoreline with beaches and limestone-rich soil.

Prince Edward County includes the population centers of Picton and Wellington and the communities of Ameliasburg, Bloomfield, Carrying Place, Cherry Valley, Consecon, Cressy, Demorestville, Fawcettville, Glenora, Hillier, Lake On The Mountain, Milford, Mountain View, Northport, Rednersville, Rosehall, Rossmore, Salmon Point, Waupoos, Waupoos Island, West Lake, Wondrous, and Yerexville.
